I did some benchmarking tests regarding loading of very large files
(currently typically 500 megabytes, or thus 0.5 gigabytes, and about 8
million lines)

I personally work with such large files on a *daily* basis (loading,
saving, searching, editing), using The Semware Editor TSE, for many
years.

-log files
-core dump files
-heap dump files
-thread dump files
can create very large files
(typically gigabytes in size), which then have to be loaded
and checked inside your text editor successfully.

To split very large files (up to 9 gigabytes) in smaller files you
could try to use e.g. GSplit, FileSplitter, ...
If wanting to split very large XML files try XMLSplit.
But I have not tested this programs yet.
Log files you might be able to split in parts,
but core dumps and heap dumps have a fixed structure,
so splitting it might not always be feasable. But you can then examine
the parts and do probably some organized intelligent splitting.

A very fast and my favorite editor is TSE (The Semware Editor), as it
has done the job of handling (editing, loading, searching, ...) very
large files (hundreds of megabytes, millions of lines, even gigabytes
large (maximally up to 2 gigabytes)) almost always super fast, very
stable, industrial strength, reliable and flawlessly, over many years
of daily frequent testing.
Ability to call Microsoft Windows APIs.
Has its own macro language (TSE SAL).

For example editing a 1 gigabyte file, together with a 0.5 gigabyte
file. Thus totally 1.5 gigabyte filesize loaded. Still TSE was very
responsive (only seconds) (e.g. navigating through the files, searching
through). Using Microsoft Windows XP Professional 32 bits.

A fastest and very powerful programmer's text editor is SlickEdit. A
really very good text editor, probably the most versatile on the market
(multi-platform, multi-functional and amazingly fast). Has its own
programmable macro language (Slick-C). E.g. floating point calculations
built in.

Note:
Emacs (with macro language Elisp) is further also an extremely
interesting, programmable and versatile text editor, but until now and
as far as I know until current latest version can thus not really load
the very large files I tested here with.
It has a low maximum buffer size limit if compiled in 32-bit mode,
it might be it loads large files when compiled in 64-bit mode.
I will have to check if that exists already for Microsoft Windows.
According to Wikipedia
"Even on 64 bit systems the limit of 512MB is only lifted in Emacs-24".
I tried latest Emacs-24 version, but again 'Memory exhausted' or
'Maximum buffer size exhausted'
