Book: Database: Operation: Create: Barcode: How to use the ISBN barcode of your books to automatically create a bookshelf database of your books?
---
Method: Program: Online: Anobii
===
You can create your bookshelf online at
http://www.anobii.com
-As this is online based, it can be run from any web browser (e.g.
Microsoft Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, Opera, Firefox, ...), and
is thus operating system (Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac, Linux, Unix,
...) independent.
-To input your book:
1. -Reading the book 1D barcode on the back of your book
1. -Input the ISBN number from the back of the book by reading the
barcode immediately using a laser barcode scanner
This works *really* fantastic.
Basically a one click process.
As you only have to scan the barcode using your barcode scanner.
It will then check automatically and show if it is a valid ISBN
number, and if so immediately process it.
And has then your book information + picture of it in
seconds on the shelf online.
So if you have many books, this is probably the method to go,
all other methods will take multiple more time, key presses
or clicks.
2. -Use a mobile phone 1D barcode scanner application
You can use e.g. the Google Android mobile phone application
Anobii
to automatically input the ISBN of your books. You can let
your mobile phone scan this barcode automatically, otherwise
use more tedious manual typing it yourself.
I did not find a similar application for the Apple iPhone yet.
3. -Enter the ISBN number manually, or manually supply other
information about the book (e.g. title, author, publisher,
...)
-Once the book information is present on the Anobii website, you can
export it back (via e.g. a .csv or Excel file sent in an e-mail to you) your
ISBN numbers and more, to put it e.g. in your database (MySql,
Microsoft SQL server, Oracle, PostGress, ...).
So you only have to input the data once, then can use it elsewhere
Example of downloaded .csv file
--- cut here: begin --------------------------------------------------
ISBN,Title,Subtitle,Author,Format,Number of pages,Publisher,Publication date,Private Note,Comment title,Comment content,Status,Stars,Tags
'9781565922068',"Java Distributed Computing","(O'Reilly Java)","Jim Farley","Paperback","384","O'Reilly Media, Inc.","'1998-01-01'","","","","Not Started","",""
--- cut here: end ----------------------------------------------------
-To import:
Input e.g. your books first at LibraryThing, then export your book list
as an Excel file, and import this file in Anobii.
===
Method: Program: Online: Blippr
You have to input your books manually
===
Method: Program: Online: Bookjetty
Similar to the other online sites you can input the ISBN number using e.g. a laser
barcode reader.
Import by extracting the ISBN numbers from another export file,
and then pasting this ISBN numbers in the text import text area box.
Recognizes many book titles (as many as Shelfari)
===
Method: Program: Online: Goodreads
Similar to the other online sites.
===
Method: Program: Online: LibraryThing
Similar to the other online sites you can input the ISBN number using e.g. a laser
barcode reader.
===
Works also fast.
===
You can import from other web sites (e.g. Shelfari), by uploading an
Excel file.
You can view a list of your books on your mobile phone
(e.g. Apple iPhone) if you go to
http://librarything.com/m
and fill in your user name.
===
Method: Program: Online: Shelfari
Similar to the other online sites you can input the ISBN number using e.g. a laser
barcode reader.
Works also fast.
You can export your book list to an Excel file.
For the moment I recommend this website, because you can find most titles there.
(as the company was bought by Amazon).
Fastest manual batch input by double clicking on the ISBN number,
using a (laser) barcode reader to read the ISBN number barcode.
===
Method: Program: Delicious Monster
===
-If you are using a Apple Mac you can use the program
Delicious Monster
which let you read your ISBN barcodes using the computer built-in webcam,
external webcam or wireless barcode scanner.
You can also export to and view the results on your Apple iPhone.
The program Delicious Monster is not available for Microsoft Windows currently.
